Song of Summer [Modern Family Photographer]

It’s finally feeling like winter here in Texas. And this gray overcast day is the perfect opportunity to delve into the archives and showcase a favorite session that never got blogged.

This session was one of those golden evenings when the light was gorgeous, the kids were happy and playful and practically every shot was a keeper.

Of course looking at these photos made me a bit nostalgic for idyllic summer nights which then spawned a side tangent on google and spotify looking for the perfect summer songs playlist to listen to while writing this post.

Feeling a tug for summer? Check out the playlist after the photos to see a few of the songs that say “summer” to me.

Song of Summer Playlist

Walking on Sunshine – Katrina & The Waves — Feathered hair and high tops.

In The Summertime – Mungo Jerry — Check out those chops.

Saturday in the Park – Chicago — Classic… but beware everything turns mustard yellow and avocado green while listening to this song.

Doin’ Time – Sublime — I always thought this was called Summertime and it has always seemed the quintessential summer song to me but I just found out today that the line was originally Doin’ Time and it was changed for radio. Huh. Well, it still feels like a summer song to me… kind of dark lyrics now that I really listen to it though.

Feeling Good – Nina Simone — An all time favorite you can’t help but get picked up by this. This links to an awesome motion graphics video interpretation of the song.

Young Folks – Peter, Bjorn & John — Ultra cheerful little diddy.

Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers — A somber summer ballad. Though something about Flea’s base pretty much makes any song by RHCP a summer song to me.

Hey Ya! – Outkast — For dancing on the beach.

Under The Milkyway – The Church — Same beach but at night with a campfire.

Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison — If you have brown eyes and are a girl there is no escaping claiming this song.

Summertime Rolls – Jane’s Addiction — A ballad for those late nights or the early summer mornings after a long night without sleep.

Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones — Begs for a warm day on a highway with the windows rolled down and the radio cranked.

Well, it’s still cold, gray and rainy out but I’m feeling like I just got back from a swim at Barton Springs. How about you? What are your summer song favorites? They can be songs about summer or songs you listened to a lot during a particular summer.

If you’ve now got the itch for summer too, here is a much more comprehensive list of summer music. Enjoy!
