Recently, I had the pleasure of creating a website and taking portraits for my former UT photojournalism graduate school professor, Donna De Cesare.
An amazing woman and photographer who has spent decades documenting first the civil war in El Salvador and then the gang cultures in Latin America and the United States. She recently published a bilingual book of these images called Unsettled / Desasosiego: Children in a World of Gangs/Los niños en un mundo de las pandillas. This book both a memoir and a visual history of political and social disruption, empathically illustrates the lives of children who have been affected by war and gang violence. Donna goes beyond the superficial depiction often seen with this subject matter and finds the humanity and fragility of these young people.
Needless to say I was thrilled and honored to help her with her portraits and website. What an amazing person.
